Relief
When “home” is on the streets, a good meal and a comfortable bed can bring a grateful smile to a weathered face. At the Kansas City Rescue Mission (KCRM) all ministry begins by meeting basic needs, and the credibility gained by these acts of compassion opens doors to take on deeper emotional and spiritual needs.
Food, shelter, medical care and of course a word of hope make up the first level of ministry provided to hundreds of homeless each year. More than 80,000 meals (1st servings) are served annually in our dining hall, where 100-plus people sit at our tables each day to enjoy a hearty and nutritious meal.
Shelter is at a premium in Kansas City for those on the streets. On average, 76 men stay in our facility each night, enjoying not just a bed, but also an environment of warmth, acceptance and compassion that has been the hallmark of KCRM since its founding in 1950. Hot showers and fresh clothing are also provided.
Medical needs are plentiful and of great variety among the homeless. KCRM provides health services at our in-house clinic, managed by a staff nurse who, along with volunteer medical professionals and outside health services, ensures that quality health care is available. Last year alone, KCRM's clinic conducted more than 3,500 appointments.
Since the first day the Kansas City Rescue Mission opened its doors in 1950, relief has begun in the chapel ministry. It is in the chapel services, offered in both English and Spanish, that the real Hope for the future is revealed, Jesus Christ. As this Good News is proclaimed, day after day, we see walls of bitterness and rejection begin to crack and the love of Jesus begin to warm cold hearts.
The relief ministry also includes Bible studies, Alcoholics Anonymous/Alcoholics Victorious meetings, counseling and client case management. Last year alone our Case Management service helped 113 individuals secure permanent housing and 82 individuals find employment. When needs for referral arise, whether for mental health or legal issues, job training, one-on-one tutoring or GED preparation, KCRM has a network of community agencies and experts available to help.
The care and services provided in KCRM's relief ministry also serve as an open door of welcome into our Community of Recovery, our ministry for renewal and lasting life change for the addicted and broken.
