Individual Volunteer Opportunities

The Kansas City Rescue Mission is committed to meeting the needs of the whole person — Body, Mind, and Spirit — and volunteers are involved in each component. Whether your passion is to be on the “frontlines” of the Mission or to stay behind the scenes, we can work together to find the area of service that will create the most impact for you, the staff and our clients.

Opportunities marked by an * indicate core volunteer positions requiring a regular time commitment. Other listings are for reserve volunteers willing to come periodically or on an as-needed basis. Questions? Contact KCRM's volunteer coordinator at volunteer@kcrm.org.

Meeting the Needs of the Spirit:

Chapel Services
We offer chapel services in both English and Spanish to our overnight clients. We welcome experienced speakers, singers/musicians and dramatists to come and share a Christ-centered, redemptive gospel message. Altar workers and intercessors are also critical to this ministry.

  Frequency: Daily
  Days/Times: Sunday - Thursday, 6:45 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
    (Musicians may arrive earlier.)

Mentoring*
Many of our residents have recently made a decision to follow Christ and need basic Christian discipleship. Through one-on-one mentoring, you can help build a solid foundation for someone in recovery. It could be something as simple as an encouraging card or phone call; or being available to take them to church with you or to a job interview. Consistency in this area is critical. Please consider making a minimum six-month commitment. (Men only, please.)

  Frequency: Weekly
  Days/Times: Flexible

Meet and Greet*
Our clients begin lining up outside the Mission around 3 p.m. every day to get their names on the list for a bed. Sometimes they wait outside for two or more hours. This “hang time” is a great opportunity for strong Christian men to mingle among them, talk with them, listen to their stories and pray for them. Every opportunity to build relationships creates an avenue for hearts to be changed. (Men only, please.)

  Frequency: Daily
  Days/Times: Monday – Sunday, 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Prayer*
There is nothing more beneficial to this ministry than the covering of prayer. By lifting up our staff, volunteers, clients, donors and directors you are ensuring that we are covered in God’s protection and recipients of His wisdom. There is no more vital ministry than this. We will include prayer requests in a monthly e-mail to our prayer volunteers and encourage them to past those requests to others, too.

  Frequency: Daily
  Days/Times: 24/7

Game Night
Laughter is good medicine! By offering a game night for our overnight clients we create a nonthreatening environment for friendships to develop that often result in evangelism and discipleship.

  Frequency: Weekly
  Days/Times: Saturdays, 5:00 - 7:30 p.m.

Meeting the Needs of the Mind:

Learning Center*
Be a tutor or helper in computer training, adult literacy, adult education, job skills, GED testing, etc. If you have an area of expertise that would be useful for recovery or reentry, consider teaching a class.

  Frequency: Daily
  Days/Times: Monday - Thursday, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Librarian* (position currently filled)
If you have a passion for books we can use you! Organizing and maintaining our residents’ library is a fun and much-needed volunteer opportunity.

Field Trips
Sometimes getting out for the day for an educational or recreational activity is just what our residents need. A trip to the local library, museum, driving range or concert can be a great opportunity for fellowship. (Men only, please.)
