KCRM’s Second Garden Season is Coming!
It’s coming! The time to plant KCRM’s Hope Garden is just around the corner. Last year, with the help of Kansas City Community Garden’s Ben Sharda and landowners Gregg and Debbie Moore, the Kansas City Rescue Mission planted a 50’ x 60’ garden plot that supplied abundant corn, squash, beans, zucchini, cucumbers and tomatoes for our dining hall. Planting trees and flowers and some creative landscaping also increased the aesthetic beauty of the property located at 2015 E. 35th Street. This year we hope to do even more!
For the average 250 individuals who eat in our dining hall each day, not only does fresh produce provide valuable nutrition, it’s also a real treat. What can compare to the taste of a juicy, vine-ripened tomato on a hot summer day; or the delight of sinking your teeth into a crisp, sweet ear of corn? But a garden is a lot of work. In order to pull this off we will need dedicated individuals to see it through. Here are some ways you can get involved:
- Donate seeds, seedlings, garden equipment and supplies to get us started
- Commit as a group or individual to planting, weeding, watering and harvesting on a regular basis
- Bring your own lawn equipment on a weekly basis to maintain the grounds around the garden
- Offer your expertise during the planning phase (i.e. what to plant, when to plant, etc.)
- Pray for favorable weather!
